1. Wake up better.
The truth is, hitting that snooze button three times every morning isn’t doing you any favors. Instead, try using an alarm clock that is designed to wake you up while you’re in light sleep, not deep sleep. When you’re woken up from a deep sleep, you’re going to feel more tired and groggy. If you’re woken up during light sleep, you’ll feel refreshed, even if you do end up waking a half-hour earlier than you had planned. Try using an alarm clock app on your phone that detects movement to know when you’re in light sleep. Or use a gentle alarm, which plays a tone at a quieter level about a half-hour before your alarm and will only wake you if you’re in light sleep. If you don’t wake then, your normal alarm will still go off.
2. Take a few minutes to journal.
Recently, I wrote about the benefits of keeping a gratitude journal. It may sound like a chore, but I promise it does have its benefits! Taking just a few minutes out of your morning to write down your thoughts and the things you’re grateful for will lift your spirits and leave you feeling ready to tackle the day. And remember, when you express gratitude for the things you already have, you’ll invite more to be grateful for into your life.
3. Make lemons part of your morning.
You may be thinking, “Lemons? What?!” But you’ve probably heard about the benefits of drinking lemon water, right? Well, lemon water is great to drink throughout the day, but it’s especially great to drink a glass of warm, lemon water in the morning. Lemon water helps to jumpstart your metabolism, flush toxins from your body, and aids in digestion.
4. Eat a healthy breakfast.
We’ve all heard it a million times before… Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And whoever has told you that wasn’t lying. Take the time to sit down and actually enjoy your breakfast every morning. My favorite healthy breakfast? An acai bowl! It tastes delicious, but is great for you too. And you can easily make them at home.
If you’re often in a hurry in the morning and don’t have time to prepare a good breakfast, prep it the night before! Make some overnight oats with oatmeal, yogurt, and various toppings. You’ll be able to take it out of the fridge the next morning and chow down.
5. Disconnect from the world.
Odds are, you’re glued to your phone all day long. Instead of reaching for your phone first thing in the morning to check Instagram, Twitter, and emails (guilty!), use this time to disconnect from the worlc and connect with yourself instead. Take the time to enjoy your breakfast, journal your thoughts, do some yoga, listen to music, whatever lights you up! You’ll have the rest of the day to see how many likes your latest selfie got overnight.
