When I first started blogging many years ago, I had no idea what I was doing.
It was essentially one big experiment that was filled with a lot of trial and error.
I had never run a blog outside of the personal LiveJournal I had throughout high school. So, this was a completely new experience for me.
All I could really do was work hard and put myself out there.
There were times when I succeeded. And there were other times where I made mistakes.
That’s just the way it goes when you’re starting out on a new journey.
I didn’t let a lack of experience slow me down. Instead, I stayed committed. And when I didn’t know how to do something, I researched until I figured it out myself.
But for those of you who are new on the journey of building a business or starting a blog… You might feel a little held back because you lack experience. So, what are you supposed to do?
That’s what we’re going to address today.
Building a Business When You Lack Experience
Just because you lack experience, it doesn’t mean you can’t ever build a thriving business. You don’t need to have a business degree in order to be successful. (I got my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.) Nor do you need to have built a profitable business before. Your first venture can absolutely be a hit and here’s how…
1. Ditch the Limiting Beliefs That Hold You Back
My first piece of advice is to quit telling yourself that you lack experience. Why? Because what you believe to be true will manifest into your life. That means if you keep telling yourself you’ll never be successful because you don’t have the proven experience, you won’t get to where you want to be.
Instead, it’s time to silence the inner critic and pursue your dreams with all your heart. Don’t worry about your past circumstances and what you have or haven’t accomplished in your life. Believe in yourself and confidently move forward. In time, you’ll see the results you hoped for.
If you need an additional kick-in-the-pants to get yourself motivated, I highly recommend reading Jen Sincero’s book, You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. It’s one that will definitely leave you feeling ready to accomplish anything you want.
2. Consume Free Content Whenever You Can
Just because you didn’t receive formal training in business at a big-time university, it doesn’t mean you’re doomed to fail. I mean, think about it… So many successful entrepreneurs today didn’t even go to college. It really doesn’t matter what you majored in. If you put your mind to something, you can make it happen.
And the good news is, there’s plenty of free information out there that will help you build a successful business. It doesn’t matter what type of business you’re starting or what field you’re in… There’s a wealth of knowledge right at your fingertips and it’s all thanks to the power of the internet.
My advice is to read blogs in your industry to learn as much as you possibly can. You can also listen to podcasts and watch YouTube videos. With so many content formats out there, there’s sure to be something that suits the way you prefer to learn. You can even study your competitors to see what’s working for them and what’s not. Where are they going wrong and how can you do better? There’s so much free information, but you have to be willing to take advantage of it.
3. Invest in Courses or Coaching
Another great move for building a business when you lack experience? Make smart investments in your success by way of courses or coaching. I’ve actually written a post all about different ways you can invest in your blog. It has some great ideas for where you can start putting your money to see a return on your investment.
But even if you’re just starting out, you shouldn’t be afraid to invest in something like a course or one-on-one coaching. These opportunities will help you grow in all the right ways. Plus, they just might help you get on the track to success much sooner than you would have if you struggled to figure it all out on your own.
So, don’t be afraid to spend money on your skills and knowledge. Make the investments that you know will help you and that you feel good about. That’s why I started coaching and have even built courses to help others. And if you want to work with me to boost your online income, just reach out!
4. Don’t be Afraid to Just Put Yourself Out There
And finally, the best thing you can do right now is to keep pushing forward. When you continue to put yourself out there and pursue your dreams, you’ll gain tons of experience along the way. Yes, sometimes you’ll fail. But the thing is, you need to learn from those mistakes and failures. Use them as motivation to work harder. Use them as a learning opportunity to do better next time. Don’t let it crush you and leave you feeling defeated. Keep doing what you do best and in time you’ll become so much better.
