If you’re like me though, you set big goals at the beginning of each year, then set smaller goals every quarter and every month. It’s the best way to ensure you’re making progress and staying on track with what you want to achieve.
However, sometimes we set goals and then struggle to make them a reality. For many of us, we’re guilty of abandoning those New Year’s resolutions before January even ends!
But not anymore!
I’m sharing a few key tips to teach you how to set goals and actually achieve them in the year ahead. Everything you’ve ever wanted will finally be within your reach.
How to Set Goals the Right Way
If you’ve set big goals for yourself in the past and failed to achieve them, there are a number of things that could have gone wrong. Perhaps you were standing in your own way or you just didn’t how to make them happen… Either way, these tips will help get you on the right path!
1. Choose Goals That Feel Right
The number one rule when learning how to set goals is to make sure you’re chasing something that feels good to you. Your goals should always be in alignment with how you want to feel in your life and what you’re hoping to accomplish.
When your goals don’t feel good to you, you’re going to be more likely to push it to the bottom of your to-do list. You’ll find every reason to procrastinate.
Think about how you want to feel in your life and choose goals that will foster those feelings. That means you shouldn’t set a goal just because it’s what everyone else is doing. If they’re chasing six figures, but that doesn’t feel good to you, that’s totally okay! Do what’s right for you.
A great resource to help with this is Danielle LaPorte’s The Desire Map.
2. Break Your Goals Into Smaller, Actionable Steps
Have you ever thought about those big goals you want to achieve and then felt overwhelmed by it all? When you think of the bigger picture, there are often a lot of feelings that come up around it. You start wondering how you’re going to accomplish something so big. You may wonder if you’re even capable of doing such a thing. And that, my friends, is very daunting.
Instead, what you need to do is break those bigger goals into smaller, actionable steps. It’s much more manageable and achievable this way. Plus, it’s easier to track your progress along the journey.
For example, let’s say you want to reach 100,000 monthly page views on your blog by the end of the year. It’s an awesome goal, but you need to figure out how you’re going to make that happen. As opposed to obsessing over the bigger picture, you want to break it down into smaller milestones. Then, create plan to make it achievable.
You could aim to hit 40,000 page views per month by the end of the first quarter. Next, you’ll strive to hit 60,000 page views before the second quarter comes to a close and so on. And you’ll block off time in your schedule for commenting on other blogs, guest posting, creating social media content, and more.
This is an essential step when learning how to set goals because it’s going to keep you on track throughout the year.

3. Set a Deadline
Having a deadline is important when it comes to setting goals. Why? Well, if you don’t give a certain task a deadline, how likely will you be to complete it in a timely fashion? Odds are, you’ll keep putting it off and pushing it to the bottom of your to-do list.
When you set goals for yourself, you need to assign a realistic deadline. Give yourself ample time to reach what you want to achieve. You shouldn’t feel stressed or rushed to get something done. On the other hand, if you give yourself too long of a deadline, it might not be enough of a push.
The deadline you choose should provide enough time to accomplish whatever you want, but still give you that sense of urgency to move forward with your goals.
How to Achieve Your Goals With Ease
Now that you know how to set goals, you’re going to need a little motivation along the way to keep you moving forward. To help you out, here are a few tips that’ll allow you to achieve your goals with ease.
1. Reward Yourself
Sometimes all you need is a little positive reinforcement to keep moving in the right direction. As you work toward your goals, reward yourself for hitting specific milestones. It’ll help you stay motivated and serve as a reminder that you are making progress, even if it doesn’t always seem like it.
2. Keep Track of Your Progress
In order to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself this year, make time to check-in on your progress every so often. This is your opportunity to see if things are moving along or if you need to pick up the pace.
Are things going the way you’d hoped? Are you getting things done in a timely fashion? Or have you found that you’re falling behind?
By keeping track of your progress, you’ll be more likely to stay on track toward meeting every single one of your goals. Do this by checking in each month to ensure you’re on the right path.
3. Seek Accountability
If you’ve never had an accountability partner before, make 2018 the year you get one! This guarantees you have someone here to motivate and encourage you every step of the way. And you get to provide that same support for them!
Having an accountability partner is a great way to stay motivated. After all, you wouldn’t want to let her down, would you?
4. Quit Standing in Your Own Way
And finally, if you want to achieve your goals in the year ahead, you have to quit standing in your own way.
That means it’s time to stop making excuses. You can no longer doubt your own abilities or your worthiness. Because, guess what? You are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. And you are worthy of reaching every last one of your goals. So, instead of holding yourself back, move forward with purpose every single day.
