One of the keys to growing your Instagram account is knowing how to take good photos. Instagram is all visual, after all! But the good news is, you don’t have to be a professional photographer to take photos that get you more like and followers. Once I started to take better Instagram photos, I noticed a tremendous increase in my followers, likes, and engagement. If you want to see those same results, all you need to do is practice a few simple tips the next time you snap that photo!
Here are my tips on how to take better Instagram photos:
Unless dark, moody photos are your thing, you want to make sure you take your photos somewhere you have good, natural lighting. You don’t want to take them in direct light, as that can cause harsh shadows. So, find a spot where natural light is coming in nicely, but isn’t shining directly onto your subject. I try to take all of my photos near a window so I have a good amount of natural light and then I edit them as needed (which I’ll talk about later). Having the right lighting can make a tremendous difference when you’re making an effort to take better Instagram photos.
If you’re struggling to get the lighting for your Instagram photo just right, use a reflector! You can buy one or make on yourself. A reflector works by bouncing the light and allowing more light to shine on your subject. It will really come in handy for taking gorgeous photos.
If you have ever taken a photography course, then you know what the rule of thirds is. If not, the rule of thirds is when you take a photo where the focus of the image is not smack-dab in the center of the frame. Photos taken with the rule of thirds in mind are generally more visually appealing.
To utilize the rule of thirds to take better Instagram photos, all you have to do is imagine your photo is broken down into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. This shows your image in nine parts. Whatever the focus of your image is, place it in one of those sections within the thirds. Although I’m not a fan of using the Instagram camera for taking photos, you can use their grid option to help you see the thirds more clearly.
Don’t forget to take an extra second to focus your camera on your subject. You don’t want the main part of your photo to be blurry, do you? Of course not! That won’t get you too many Instagram likes! All you need to do is simply tap on the focal point of the photo and allow the camera to focus and adjust the settings accordingly. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
Editing is an important step when you want to take better Instagram photos. But remember not to go overboard in the editing process! It’s totally fine to slap on a filter, but don’t go crazy editing out imperfections on your latest selfie or anything like that. Personally, I only use filters as a way to brand my photos on Instagram. I like to make sure my photos have the same look and feel so they are recognizable as mine to my followers.
I use VSCOcam to add one of three filters I purchased to every single one of my photos. And by only using a select few filters, I know that all of my photos will have the same vibe, effectively branding them as my own. VSCOcam is great because there is a nice selection of filters and you’re able to control how filtered the image is. There are also other great features to VSCOcam, so I highly recommend it. However, you can still get great pictures by editing directly in the Instagram app!
Use your smartphone camera
For more control over your image, use your smartphone camera instead of the Instagram camera. iPhone users, if you are worried about something getting cropped out when you upload it to Instagram, all you need to do is select the “square” setting before you start snapping photos! Plus, this is obviously ideal if you’re doing you’re editing outside of Instagram.
As with everything, practice makes perfect. Over time, you will nail these tips and take better Instagram photos. Have fun and play around with different subjects, perspectives, and editing tools until you find your signature.
